Fabian 2021

Fabian - a good friend of mine. This portrait was inspired by the mood around the last day we met before he moved back home. The pub we met in was dark, but I liked how the wall sconce cast a soft yellow hue on one half of his face. His posed pictures made us laugh so I had to take a few whilst he was talking or in this case, smirking. My approach to this portrait was to create something light so I chose to do a layered painting on a pencil/ink drawing, adding one colour group at a time. I started with cooler colours, greys and blues followed by warmer cadmium red light and nickel quinacridone gold. Fabian is such an unencumbered person, and I wanted his portrait to reflect that loose style.
