First, a little context: this waterwheel in Painshill Park was built around 1835 to pump water from the River Mole into the Serpentine Lake, a strategic element of the 18th century Georgian landscape garden. For me, the main attractions of this 19th century waterwheel are the complicated gears, mechanisms, and heavy industrial demeanour. I also liked how the soft winter morning light behaved with the window; effectively acting like a prism to enhance the cooler pinks and purples whilst helping to create shadows across the mechanical shaft. I wanted you the viewer to feel as though you are at Painshill Park, seeing the waterwheel through the hazy window as I did, just catching the glint of Serpentine Lake.
